{"id":9,"date":"2016-11-24T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-24T19:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kimsal.com\/blog\/?p=9"},"modified":"2016-11-24T14:59:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-24T19:59:00","slug":"importance-of-backups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kimsal.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/24\/importance-of-backups\/","title":{"rendered":"Importance of backups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Well\u2026 here we are. &nbsp;10 years later, and \u2026 no backups. &nbsp;Or\u2026 none of the data that\u2019s important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently had a drive crash in my main server where this blog is hosted. &nbsp;Had it happen 2 years ago, but the data was recovered, and I put everything on automatic backups. &nbsp;Using virtualmin, a great control panel, I had it automatically back things up to s3 and to a second local drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HOWEVER\u2026 I got lazy. &nbsp;I made some databases by hand, instead of using the virtualmin tools (either CLI tools or web screen) and the blog database had been disassociated with the main domain account, and it wasn\u2019t backed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve just lost 10 years of blog posts, comments, etc. \u00a0I\u2019ve asked for the drive, if it\u2019s still around, to be shipped to me, and I may try to recover data (a few other bits would be really useful to have as well), but I\u2019ve had to come to terms with the notion that it just may be gone. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may energize me to post here more, however. &nbsp;I\u2019ve gotten a bit lazy and engaged people more on facebook the last year or so, vs here, and I\u2019ve missed posting here, so\u2026 I may be back in more volume soon!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well\u2026 here we are. &nbsp;10 years later, and \u2026 no backups. &nbsp;Or\u2026 none of the data that\u2019s important.
